What is Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA)?

Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) is a debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder. About one in 50,000 people in the United States have Friedreich's Ataxia. (curefa.org)

Currently, I am walking with a walker. I can do almost anything but at a much slower pace than “normal”. Since the disease is progressive, one day I’m going to lose my ability to walk and will need a wheelchair. I am not looking for any pity, just giving you the facts. I just get from here to there differently.

There are a lot of clinical trials and research going on to find a treatment or a cure, which is exciting. I try to be a part of trials whenever I can.

Although cardiomyopathy is a symptom of the disease, I am so thankful to not have shown any symptoms for heart issues yet.

Side note: if you are willing and able to make a donation my family’s rideATAXIA team, (Team Hennessy) a bike ride for charity currently scheduled for the end of May. A cure would mean more to me and my loved ones (including my brother Zack who also has FA) than I can imagine!
